Terms of Service

These terms govern your use of Phraseback, a language learning tool that captures tutoring session audio, generates transcripts, and extracts linguistic insights. By using Phraseback, you agree to these terms.

The service

Phraseback records audio from your language tutoring sessions (via the desktop app or browser extension), transcribes the audio using OpenAI, and uses Anthropic's Claude to extract structured linguistic insights such as Nuance Cards, Gentle Corrections, and Cultural Notes. The service also supports solo practice sessions where you record yourself speaking and receive AI-generated feedback.

Phraseback is a tool for personal language learning. It is not a substitute for professional translation, language certification, or legal interpretation services.

Your account

  • One person per account. Do not share your login credentials.
  • Provide accurate information when signing up. Keep your email address current so we can reach you.
  • You are responsible for activity on your account. If you suspect unauthorized access, contact us immediately.

Acceptable use

You may use Phraseback for personal language learning. You may not:

  • Resell or redistribute Phraseback's output (transcripts, insights, audio episodes) as a commercial product.
  • Scrape or automate access to the service beyond normal use of the provided apps and APIs.
  • Record others without consent. You are responsible for ensuring all participants in a recorded session are aware of and consent to the recording, in compliance with applicable laws.
  • Upload harmful content. Do not use Phraseback to process audio that contains illegal content, hate speech, or content that violates the rights of others.
  • Circumvent limits. Do not attempt to bypass subscription tier limits, rate limits, or other usage restrictions.

Subscriptions and billing

  • Phraseback offers subscription plans billed monthly via Stripe.
  • Your subscription renews automatically each billing cycle unless you cancel.
  • You can cancel anytime from your account settings. Cancellation takes effect at the end of your current billing period.
  • No prorated refunds for partial billing periods. You retain access to paid features until the end of your current period.
  • Phraseback may change subscription pricing with 30 days' notice. Price changes do not apply to active billing periods.
  • New accounts may receive a free trial. Trial terms (duration, session limits) are displayed at signup.

Your content and data ownership

You own your content. Your audio recordings, transcripts, and the raw content of your sessions belong to you.

License to process. By using Phraseback, you grant us a limited, non-exclusive license to process your content solely to provide the service — transcription, insight extraction, and storage. We do not use your content for any other purpose.

AI-generated insights. Nuance Cards, Gentle Corrections, Cultural Notes, Practice Prompts, and audio episodes are derived works produced by the service from your content. You may use, copy, and share these insights freely for personal purposes.

Data portability. You can access your transcripts and insights through the Phraseback journal. Full data export features are planned. Until then, contact us for a data export.

Intellectual property

The Phraseback name, logo, design, and software are our intellectual property. Your use of the service does not grant you any rights to our brand or technology beyond what is needed to use the service.

AI accuracy

Phraseback uses third-party AI services (OpenAI for transcription, Anthropic for insight extraction). While we work to provide accurate results:

  • Transcription may contain errors, especially with background noise, accents, or mixed languages.
  • AI-generated insights are not guaranteed to be correct. They are learning aids, not authoritative linguistic references.
  • We do not guarantee uptime or availability. The service depends on third-party APIs that may experience outages.

Use your own judgment when applying insights from Phraseback to real conversations.

Limitation of liability

Phraseback is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind, express or implied. To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law:

  • We are not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the service.
  • Our total liability for any claim related to the service is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months preceding the claim.

Termination

By you. You can delete your account at any time from Settings. A 30-day grace period allows you to cancel the deletion. After 30 days, your data is permanently deleted (except billing records required by law).

By us. We may suspend or terminate your account if you violate these terms. We will notify you by email and provide a reasonable opportunity to export your data, unless the violation is severe (e.g., illegal use).

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms from time to time. For material changes, we will notify you by email or in-app notice at least 30 days before the change takes effect. Continued use of the service after changes take effect constitutes acceptance.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of Sweden. Any disputes arising from these terms or your use of the service will be resolved in the courts of Sweden.
